A DEXA scan (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) is a quick, painless test that measures bone mineral density (BMD). It is the standard way to detect osteoporosis — a condition in which bones become thin and fragile, often without any warning until a fracture happens.
Why bone density matters
Weak bones can break from a minor fall or even routine activity. Detecting low bone density early means it can be managed with diet, vitamin D, exercise and, where needed, medication — long before a serious fracture.
Who should consider a DEXA scan
- Women after menopause and men over 50, especially with risk factors.
- Anyone who has had a fracture from a minor injury.
- People on long-term steroids or with conditions affecting bone.
- Those with a family history of osteoporosis or hip fracture.
What to expect
You lie comfortably on a table while a scanner passes over your hip and spine. It takes only a few minutes, uses a very low dose of radiation, and needs no injections or preparation. Results are shared with your doctor to plan next steps.
DEXA scanning is available in-house at Ashutosh Hospital, so testing and specialist consultation can be coordinated together.
